Afghan Ministry of Hajj and Religious Affairs rejected reports of marriage of an 8-year-old girl to a 40-year-old man in Samangan. Earlier Sarajuddin Fetrat, district governor of Hazrat Sultan, had said that Mullah Mosa, Imam of a mosque in the district, had conducted the marriage of Yasmin, an 8-year old girl, to a 40-year old man named Nasrullah. Fetrat added that Nasrullah took responsibility of Yasmin as an adopted child five years ago when her mother passed away. Murtaza Hamid, head of publication at religious ministry, told Killid that they have not officially been notified of the incident yet. Meanwhile Gulalai Safi, director of legal department of women affairs department of Samangan, said that the girl’s marriage is an act of violence against children and asserted that rate of violence against women and children has dropped in the province compared to previous years. She added that 184 cases of violence against women were recorded in the province last year while the figure was 210 in 2015.
