MAIL to Launch Saffron Training Programme for Farmers

The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock (MAIL) will train 12,000 farmers in saffron cultivation in the next solar year. Lotfullah Rashid, MAIL spokesman, said that they will launch a five-year plan for development of saffron cultivation and harvest in the next solar year.  He said that they will distribute 500 tonnes of saffron follicles to farmers in 30 provinces across the country. The spokesman further stated that they plan to build two big laboratories for saffron quality testing next year. Rashid added that thousand acres of lands are dedicated to saffron cultivation. This comes as the International Taste and Quality Institute in the Belgian capital of Brussels named Afghanistan’s saffron the best in the world for the third year in a row in mid-2015.
