Amnesty Says ‘Hate Rhetoric’ Makes World Divisive, More Dangerous

Amnesty International said human rights around the world are under threat because of politicians who are using “toxic, dehumanizing” rhetoric against ethnic or religious minorities in order to strengthen their political powers. Its annual report singles out US President Donald Trump as an example of an “angrier and more divisive politics”. Divisive and “poisonous” language used by politicians such as  Trump is putting vulnerable populations at risk and making the whole world a more dangerous place, Amnesty International said on Wednesday. The group made special reference to the US president’s executive order last month that banned refugees and immigrants from seven mostly Muslim countries from entering the US.But it criticises other leaders, including those of Turkey, Hungary and the Philippines, who it says have used narratives of fear, blame and division. The group also said that some governments are exploiting refugees for political ends.
