Today, third of Hot in the Afghan calendar, marks the 37th anniversary of the uprising against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Thirty seven years ago, a 120,000 strong Red Army equipped with sophisticated weapons invaded Afghanistan. The invasion was followed by protests in various parts of the country, triggering a war that lasted 10 years and resulted in the Soviet Union’s biggest defeat and subsequent disintegration. The uprising began on 22 February 1980 from Chandawol area of Kabul and people from other parts of Kabul converged to protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Thousands of Afghans lost their lives and were crippled in the war, while five million fled as refugees to neighbouring Iran and Pakistan
