Fifty Afghans whose requests for asylum were turned down will be sent back to Afghanistan, according to German media reports. In October, Germany and Afghanistan struck an agreement on the fate of hundreds of Afghan migrants who risked their lives to enter Germany in the hope of permanent residency. The news magazine Der Spiegel reported applications of these asylum seekers were rejected by the courts in Germany and they must leave Germany soon. In 2016, Afghans were the second biggest group of asylum seekers in Germany after Syrians, according to data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). According to Reuters News Agency, Der Spiegel said on its website that the Afghans would be flown from Frankfurt to Kabul and then ultimately sent back to their home regions as long as these were reasonably safe. It said the next plane had already been chartered for the beginning of January.
